It is common to find property in Doncaster in need of damp proofing, both commercial and residential. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever and your damp proof course is no different. Having damp in a property can cause serious harm to the structural integrity if left untreated.
It is important you can identify the signs of damp and are able to spot them quickly. Once you have identified damp in a property, ensure the area is surveyed by a trained professional in damp proofing properties. Damp proofing and damp proof courses are only effective when the true cause of the problem is found. From this a correct course of treatment can be made to eradicate damp from the property.

Condensation is a probem which can effect a large number of properties across South Yorkshire, especially common in winter months. Condensation problems are more apparnet in properties with poorer insulation and heating facilities, leaving cold surfaces. Condensation is formed when warm evaporated air contacts with a colder surface such as a window, mirror or wall leaving moisture on the surface.
If left untreated, excess condensation in a property can result in black mould and damage to walls, window frames and other parts of a property including furniture in some cases.

Rising Damp is a one of the most common causes of damp in older properties across South Yorkshire, including Doncaster, where the DPC has failed below the level of the ground outside. With many of the properties we have worked on in Doncaster, the DPC is original to the house build and has deteriorated over time allowing moisture to rise through the walls.
Rising damp occurs when a damp proof course fails and moisture enters a structure through the permeable nature of brick and mortar below ground level. The moisture from the ground surrounding the property penetrates the foundations below the brickwork level. From entry below ground, moisture rises through the structure causing visible dampness in the form of hygroscopic salts. These salts were originally dissolved in the moisture and dry out above ground level, often leaving white marks on brickwork.
Pentrating damp is similar in many ways to rising damp. Instead of rising through a wall, moisture penetrates from an elevated level. This is typicall seen more in older properties where walls or roof tiles have become degraded over time leaving them exposed.
The most common causes of penetrating damp in Doncaster properties are eroded brickwork, missing cement, dislodged roof tiles or faulty guttering. It is also common to see penetrating damp around windows and external doors where these do not properly fit the space they are intended for leaving gaps. This can often the case on walls which are exposed to wind and driven rain on a regular basis.
With a full damp proofing survey of your property, the Toucan team can discover the root cause of your damp problems, preventing further damage.
